I will mostly be using it for photo and video editing, web design with Dreamweaver, Netflix, and basic web browsing.
I am getting the HP Envy 14, so I am afraid the i7 might overheat it or run the battery down faster. Price doesn't matter.Do I need a Core i5 or i7 processor?
i5 is best for you
A 14" HP Envy Laptop??????? You cannot do serious editing on such a small screen. Yes, the laptop will get HOT - probably too hot to put on your lap! Then there is the price - I went through the "build process", choosing top of the line i7, SSD OS drive, 750GB secondary drive and came to $US2300+! I do note that it comes with Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements at no extra cost. You could put together a desktop system for less than 1/3 of that price, with much better specs.Do I need a Core i5 or i7 processor?
I have been working with video editing for over 12 years. Nothing can compare to the i7 except the i5. Your biggest concern though is your video card. That is the work horse for video editing these days. I'm not sure if the HP Envy is a laptop or not. My guess is that it is. You will have to spend over 2000.00 for a laptop that will have a built in 560GTX by Nvidia or better to get 2/3 the speed of a desktop since the memory of a laptop graphics card is ddr3 at best instead of ddr5 with over 300 processors in a desktop card. If price is not an issue, then I would consider a gaming laptop either by Alienware or my favorite Asus. The i5 should be o.k. as long as you can get 1.5 to 2.0GB of graphic memory and a very powerful card.
